Hey there! I’m Katherine Webster, an assistant coach at Body Brain Alliance, and today I want to talk to you about something that has transformed my life: slowing down.
In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush and feel overwhelmed.
But by implementing a few simple habits, you can create more space for joy, spontaneity, and intentional living. So let’s dive into three practices that have made a huge difference for me and can do the same for you.
Habit #1: Journaling for Clarity and Connection
As someone who tends to have a lot of thoughts swirling around in my head, I’ve discovered the power of journaling. By taking a few minutes each day to write down my thoughts and worries, I create space for them to surface and be acknowledged.
I use a stream-of-consciousness style, jotting down everything from my to-do list to my deepest concerns. This practice not only helps me focus and prioritize but also brings clarity and connection to my values.
Through journaling, I often stumble upon new ideas, fresh perspectives, and even solutions to problems I’ve been grappling with.
It’s incredible how slowing down and giving yourself the freedom to express your thoughts on paper can unlock creativity, enhance decision-making, and prevent living on autopilot.
Habit #2: Giving Your Phone a Bedtime
I think we’re all guilty of spending too much time on our phones, especially before bed. To reclaim precious morning moments and cultivate a sense of slowness, try giving your phone a bedtime.
Before you go to sleep, plug it in on the other side of the room. By doing so, you create a physical barrier that prevents you from easily snoozing your alarm and falling back into bed.
Waking up with intention and without the immediate distraction of your phone allows you to start your day on a calm and joyful note.
Take the time to engage in activities that bring you happiness, whether it’s enjoying a cup of coffee, practicing mindfulness, or indulging in a creative pursuit.
This slow start sets the tone for the rest of your day, helping you feel grounded, focused, and less rushed.
Habit #3: Driving the Exact Speed Limit
While it may seem counterintuitive in a world that values speed and efficiency, consciously choosing to drive the exact speed limit can be a powerful way to slow down.
Normally, I go with the flow of traffic, but often, we find ourselves caught up in the fast pace set by others. By intentionally driving at the designated speed limit, even if it means going slower than everyone else, you force yourself to slow down.
I’ll admit that this habit can be uncomfortable, especially if you’re used to rushing around. However, by shaking up your routine and stepping out of your comfort zone, you’ll develop a greater tolerance for discomfort and strengthen your mindfulness practice.
Take advantage of the extra time in the car to create a pleasant experience by listening to your favorite music or podcasts that bring you joy.
This intentional driving not only improves your overall experience but also helps you arrive at your destinations on time by accounting for the extra time required.
